Younger nurses are being encouraged to join the Barbados Nurses Association. The call from President of the BNA Dr. Fay Parris comes as Barbados marks Nurses Week - an annual celebration that runs from May 6 to 12. First Vice President, Marguerite Bourne-Clarke has highlighted the strides made by the association since its inception. She says it's been able to achieve several results through lobbying. The training for Tradewinds 2024 will carry on to the upcoming ICC Men's T20 Cricket World Cup and beyond. This is according to Land Track Lead Planner for the exercise, Captain Shane Drakes. He was speaking to members of the media, who got to experience first hand some of the training at Paragon Base in Christ Church. The group was exposed to live firing exercises, a medical simulation, and public order training at the Earth Station in St. John. But the highlight of the day was the ride in the US Military Black Hawks under the command of Officer in Charge of the Black Hawk Operation for Exercise TRADEWINDS, Major Salvator Garcia. The group left Paragon Base and journeyed to St. John, followed by a short trip to Bridgetown and back to where it all started. An Acting General Secretary has been appointed by the Opposition Democratic Labour Party after a vote was taken to suspend Steve Blackett. Barbados' tourism product has been heavily promoted at the Arabian Travel Market and Showcase ahead of the Cricket World Cup. A local team of top tourism officials from the Barbados Tourism Marketing Inc took a trip to Dubai to be part of the grand event, which is watched by millions worldwide and is a showcase for some of the wealthiest individuals across the United Arab Emirates. Members of the Barbadian delegation, led by Minister of Tourism Ian Gooding-Edghill, got a chance to speak about the Barbados experience, its attractions and the upcoming cricket tournament. West Indies Cricket legends Ian Bradshaw and Joel Garner were among those involved in the promotion activities. Managing Director of Blue Sky Luxury Tonya Wallace, who specialises in luxury villa sales, says they have made progress in forming partnerships with some of the leading travel entities in the UAE. The Hamilton Lashley Human Development Foundation and community practitioners plan to renew efforts to channel young people into productive activities and away from crime and violence. The meeting held at Founder Hamilton Lashley's St. Michael home included Chairman of the Foundation Henderson Williams, PRO of the Bayland Masters Football Team Pedro Agard and community practitioner Winston 'Iston Bull' Branch who was instrumental in the peace treaty. Branch says any increase in crime impacts not only the community, but the country. Meanwhile, Chairman of the Hamilton Lashley Foundation Henderson Williams says more focus must be placed on investing in community and community activities, noting the influence and impact the Foundation can have. Government has launched a new programme called Reclaiming Our Atlantic Destiny or ROAD Project. This project is in an effort to leverage the archival records of Barbados. Barbados and the Caribbean have been warned to be on the look out for an influx of sargassum seaweed. The Caribbean Regional Fisheries Mechanism (CRFM) says a large quantity is on its way. Executive Director, Milton Haughton says some countries are already being impacted. His comments came during a discussion held at the 8th International Cooperation Conference of the Association of Caribbean States in Suriname. Though the sargassum seaweed is deemed a nuisance, Mr. Haughton says is a natural part of the marine environment that plays an important role in the marine eco-system. He has pointed the finger at climate change and nitrification of ocean water. Government's million trees project is growing. Minister of Environment and National Beautification Adrian Forde has announced that close to 600,000 trees have been planted, as part of the project launched by Prime Minister Mia Amor Mottley in 2019. During a press conference, Mr. Forde says he's pleased with the project's progress, despite setbacks caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. Meanwhile, dendrologist Nigel Jones is insisting the project must not be taken for granted and is calling on Barbadians to keep planting trees. He reiterates that trees play a fundamental role in various areas. Students of the Thelma Berry Nursery now have a state of the art room facilitating the learning of science, technology, reading, engineering, arts and mathematics or STREAM. The new air conditioned room, outfitted with modern and traditional tools, was officially opened on Wednesday at the St. David's, Christ Church school. It was in the works for a few years, due to several hiccups. Principal Katie Riley, is pleased it has finally become a reality. Senior Education Officer, Dr. Christina Morris praised the school for creating the space as she notes it allows for integration across the curriculum. Government is seeking to get Barbadians to help improve the country's food security and beautify their properties. The Ministry of Environment and National Beautification has launched a Parish Home Garden Competition. Minister Adrian Forde says the initiative is an opportunity for Barbadians to beautify their country. Coordinator of the Tree Planting Project Team Dewyn Phillips says the inter-parish competition is slated to run between May 10 and 23. He says the winners from each parish will receive a prize of $1500 for having the most beautiful home or residential garden.
